The Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) is a unique code used to identify transportation companies.  It is typically two to four alphabetic letter long.  It was developed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association in the 1960's to help the transportation industry for computerizing data and records.

SCAC's are required when doing business with the U.S. Governmental agencies and with most commercial shippers including those in the automobile, petroleum, forest industry and chemical industries.  They are also required by many in suppliers to retail businesses and carriers engaged in railroad piggyback trailer and ocean container dryage.  Carriers who use the Uniform Intermodal Interchange Agreement (UIIA) are required to maintain a valid SCAC.  The petroleum industry uses SCAC's in their integrated software programs that expedite the movement of bills of lading, pipeline tickets, product transfer orders and inventory of data.  Many commercial shippers and receivers utilize SCAC's in their fright bill audit and payment systems.
